Teni's R&B Remix Of Obesere's "Egungun" Is An Absolute Vibe | Watch Video

Teni’s R&B Remix Of Obesere’s “Egungun”: An Overview

Teni is one unique act. The artiste, who’s known for her fan-targeted clips of her singing or doing some funny stuff, has, unsurprisingly, jumped on Obesere’sEgungun” rave.

Over a melancholic piano instrumental, Teni bares her soulful vocals, delivering a performance which bares testament to her raw talent. Even as she croons with that funny expression of hers, one easily sees how serious of an artiste Teni is.

Top Ghana Songs of the Week – Stonebwoy - Kuami Eugene - Kwesi Arthur

Stonebwoy

The music grind never stops, which means every week we’ll definitely see brand new songs released from every corner of Africa and that includes Ghana, and from some of our favorite artists as well as new cats looking to catch their big break.

This week saw rekindled beefs, double releases from one artist, and several tunes celebrating Ghana’s 63rd Independence Day (the 6th of March). Happy Independence Ghana! There’s never a shortage of tunes.

Here at NotJustOk, we bring you a few picks of the top songs that came out from Ghana this week. Check them out below.

Enjoy!

Listen to the Top Ghana Songs of the Week

Stonebwoy ft. Chivv & Spanker – Good Morning

Ghanaian reggae and dancehall titan Stonebwoy dropped this one in the run leading to his upcoming album. “Good Morning” is a collaboration with Dutch singer Chivv (his second appearance in African music in recent times, the first being the remix of King Promise’s “Commando”) and producer Spanker. He issues the upbeat dancehall tune along with some pristine visuals.

Kwesi Arthur – Revolution Sound (Thoughts of King Arthur 6)

Superstar rapper and “Grind Day” hitmaker Kwesi Arthur issued the 6th installment of his “Thoughts of King Arthur” rap series, and this one is titled “Revolution Sound”. Dropping it on Ghana’s Independence Day, he issued memoir of sorts, addressing a number of social and political issues plaguing his nation. Kwesi barred no holds and pulled no punches, telling it how it is.

Kuami Eugene ft. Shatta Wale & Samini – Ghana We Dey

Lynx Entertainment singer Kuami Eugene came through with this one, another Independence Day tune, titled “Ghana We Dey”. He teamed up with dancehall titans Shatta Wale and Samini, to deliver this dancehall tune celebrating his motherland Ghana.

M.anifest ft. Bayku – The Gamble

Elite Ghanaian rapper M.anifest presented the official video to the title track of his late 2019 EP “The Gamble”. On the follow up to his collaborations with Simi and Burna Boy, he presses on with this blend of afrobeats and hip-hop, waxing lyrical on love and the issues that come along with it.

Shatta Wale – Little Tip (Sarkodie Diss)

This week saw controversial dancehall singer Shatta Wale rekindling his already squashed beef with Africa’s most decorated rapper Sarkodie. The diss track, aimed openly at its recipient (no subs) is titled “Little Tip”, and it sees the singer going in on his counterpart with jabs attacking several areas of the rapper’s life, including his pockets. Interesting.

Stonebwoy – African Party

Dancehall singer Stonebwoy ended up blessing us with two dope songs and videos this week, and this second one is titled “African Party”. A single from his about to arrive album Anloga Junction, “African Party” presents a perfect picture of the new direction the singer’s sound is headed in.

International Women’s Day: 5 Nigerian Female Artistes Who Paved The Way

Women are the bedrock of every society. We’re practically nothing without women –just to state the facts.

In Nigerian music history, too, women have wielded such influence in the trajectory of its story. Whether it’s through their music or activism, the woman is an indispensable part of the music scene, and in extension, the larger society.

For International Women’s Day, these are seven female artists who, to borrow a phrase from that infamous Burna Boy brouhaha, paved the way. Definitely not an exhaustive list, these five women (six, actually) have in some way, shaped the genres and eras they operated in, and moved its conversation to a positive place.

This is our little way of saying Thank You. Also, Join the #InternationalWomensDay on twitter for updates

List of 5 Nigerian Female Artistes Who Paved The Way – International Women’s Day

ONYEKA ONWENU

Onyeka Onwenu

The Elegant Stallion as she’s fondly called remains a prominent figure in Nigerian music history.

A stellar career which began in 1981 while Mrs. Onwenu worked as a writer and presenter for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), her documentary, Nigeria, A Squandering of Riches, “became the definitive film about corruption in Nigeria as well as the intractable Niger Delta agitation for resource control and campaign against environmental degradation in the oil-rich region of Nigeria.”

When she started music, her sociopolitical concerns spilled on record. Her songs, concerned with contemporary Nigerian issues, tackled the themes of health, peace, and women’s rights.

With several influential albums both as a secular and gospel act, Onyeka Onwenu spoke the truth to power, even while her music retained its beauty and wisdom.

Essential listens: Iyogogo, Wait For Me (with King Sunny Ade), One Love, Keredim, You and I

THE LIJADU SISTERS

#InternationalWomensDay: 5 Nigerian Female Artistes Who Paved The Way

The Lijadu Sisters

Anyone familiar with the popular Nigerian music of the 70s must have come across the name Lijadu Sisters. Made up of identical twin sisters Taiwo and Kehinde, the group achieved massive mainstream success, making music that incorporated varying genres like reggae, soul, disco and psychedelic rock. Though some of their songs were politically-charged, the bulk of their music engaged in the trivialities of their time.

They earned international acclaim in 1976 when their hit single, “Danger,” had them tour the UK, making the first female exports out of Nigeria, with no male retinue or male bandmates. Around this period, they would work with King Sunny Ade and Jimi Solanke. They also performed with Ginger Baker & Salt at the World Music Festival during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

Essential listens: Come on Home, Reincarnation, Iya Mi Jowo, Orere Ejigbo, Life’s Gone Down Low

CHRISTY ESSIEN-IGBOKWE

Christy Essien-Igbokwe

A multi-linguist, Christy Essien-Igbokwe famously sang in Igbo, Ibibio, Efik, Hausa, Yoruba, and English, which may or may not have earned her the title of Nigeria’s Lady of Songs.

Mrs. Essien-Igbokwe’s most popular song was “Seun Rere,” a nationwide darling that reached even beyond the shores of the country. Although her albums were largely successful, 1981’s Ever Liked My Person? was an instant classic, gaining attention from far and wide.

Although an excellent artiste, Christy Essien-Igbokwe’s influence was even more vast. With an eye towards improving life for Nigerian artists, Essien is credited with initiating the first meeting which formed the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) in 1981. The association was founded a year later; King Sunny Adé was president, Sonny Okosun was vice-president, and Essien was treasurer. From 1996 to 1999, she was the PMAN’s first female president.

Essential listens: Seun Rere, Teta Nu Na Ula, You Can’t Change A Man, Ife, Change The System

EVI-EDNA OGHOLI

Evi-Edna Ogholi

Arguably the greatest female Nigerian Reggae artiste of all times, Evi-Edna Ogholi’s prime time came in the 80s and the 90s. She had released her debut album My Kind of Music in 1987. She also had a trio of albums (On The Move, Happy Birthday, and Step by Step) which did well commercially, reaching Platinum status.

Happy Birthday,” released under Polygram Records in 1988 is undoubtedly Evi-Edna Ogholi’s most famous song, still rings true till this day, its sunny sound casting happiness wherever and whenever it’s played.

Essential listens: Happy Birthday, Ririovara (Dry Your Tears), Message to the Youth, Oghene Me, Look Before You Cross

SASHA P

#InternationalWomensDay: 5 Nigerian Female Artistes Who Paved The Way

Sasha P

When Hip Hop made its way into Nigeria in the late 80s, there were almost no women in the scene. Even close to a decade later, there had been no prominent female rapper. Enter Sasha P: with a string of releases, she caught the attention of eLDee and was signed on to Trybe Records, a major record label at the time. She didn’t stay for long, though, as she released her debut album, First Lady, under her own imprint STORM.

Sasha P is credited with having paved the way for other female rappers, from Weird MC to Eva Alordiah, who would go on to achieve cultural relevance years after P’s pioneering efforts. She has a lot of awards to her name. In 2009, she won the “Best Female Artist” award in the UK at the Women in Entertainment Awards for her popular song “Adara.” She was also nominated in dual categories (Best Female Video and Best Cinematography) by the SoundCity Video Music Awards for her “Only One” in 2009. Amongst other prestigious honors, she was also the first-ever Nigerian female artist to perform at the 20th anniversary of the World Music Awards in October 2008. She was also the first Nigerian female artiste to win the Best Female Award at MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA).

The First Lady of Nigerian Hip Hop, as Sasha P is called, also encouraged humanitarian efforts. She was part of the “Save a street child” campaign in Lagos (January 2009) and the “Maternal Mortality” project (May 2009) which aimed to educate and help cater to the needs of young mothers who seek adequate medical care.

Essential listens: Adara, Only One, Oya, Emi Le Gan, Bad Girl P

Overview of Top Naija Songs of the Week: Davido – Wande Coal – Mayorkun – Falz – M.I

The music grind never stops, which means every week, we’ll definitely see brand new releases from some of our favorite artists, as well as new cats looking to catch their big break. It’s the same all over the world, and Nigeria is no exception.

In the past week, we’ve massive videos from Davido, Wande Coal, Mayorkun, and a very promising collaboration by DJ Neptune, Joeboy & Mr Eazi. The collabs don’t end there as we’ve got Terry Apala/Niniola, Falz/Ms Banks, 2baba/Wizkid, and quite a few off M.I’s “Judah” EP.

Peep this week’s round-up below!

VIDEO: DJ Neptune, Joeboy & Mr Eazi – Nobody

When DJ Neptune previewed the visuals on social media, eyebrows were surely raised. I mean.. who knew Neptune could turn into Prime Michael Jackson? He finally dropped the MJ-inspired video last Friday, and the song itself is really nice. Peep it below.

VIDEO: Wande Coal – Ode Lo Like

While we wait on Wande’s new EP to drop this month, here’s a rare video from the black diamond. The song is a slow burner, but you’ll def end up loving it after a few listens.

VIDEO: Mayorkun – Geng

Is this the biggest song in Nigeria right now? You could make a case for that. What is undisputable, though, is the fact that #Geng is the most covered/sampled/freestyled joint in Nigeria in 2020 so far.

VIDEO: Davido – 1 Milli

While OBO is currently touring the US, that hasn’t stopped the Afrobeats flagbearer from dishing out new content for the fans. 1 Milli is a fan fave off the #AGoodTime album. Peep the street/traditional video starring Davido’s fiancee, Chioma

M.I Abaga – The Commandment (feat. Bucky Raw & Reinhard)

M.I finally dropped his latest project, the “Judah” EP a few days ago. While there are quite a few tough jamz on it, this is my early fave.

Simi and Tiwa Savage Performing together: An Overview

Simi and Tiwa Savage performing together is the video you never knew you needed. In a entertainment/music scene where female artistes are pitted against each other, two female artistes showing love for themselves is just beautiful to see.

When Tiwa Savage got on stage, Simi embraced her warmly. They went on to perform the philosophical “Ayo,” and a number of songs much to the delight of fans who were enchanted by not one, but two magical voices.

MI Abaga - The Judah EP review

MI Abaga – The Judah EP Cover

MI Abaga – The Judah EP Review

“I came from nothin’ hustle forcing my way into the discussion”

– MI Abaga, “The Warrior

Since MI Abaga’s 2017 opinion-splitting song (you know the one), his music, or the bulk of what constitutes it, has been engaged in the discourse of legacy. Yung Denzl, his 2018 album, was part of the grandiose LAMB claim that alongside Loose Kaynon, A-Q, and prodigy Blaqbonez, the Hip Hop game would be saved. It was a talk and do move, a much-needed one, given the debris of controversy his Fix Up song left.

Yung Denzl navigated the terrain of introspection and philosophy like the typical MI project would. Maximalist in idea, MI employed, amongst a number of artistic talents, the services of a therapist. Her chilling voice was all over the project, a reality thread to hold the artistic aspirations of MI. Known for his tendency to be expressive, Denzl, with its casualness and reserve, was like a pressed hand on M’s chest. While it may have been good for his person, it wasn’t allied with the MI brand, the Jude Abaga fans who’d grew up on “Beef” and “Crowd Mentality” wanted.

But growth is the only constant. MI Abaga, with his assertive personality, is like the friend who never wants to lose an argument. You’ve probably seen it if you’ve listened to his interviews and that Loose Talk episode, you’d know this. Take the intelligence of the person, confidence in speaking, logical ways to structuring an argument (or holding a conversation), and add these to the undeniable artistic ingenuity of MI Abaga and you get 9 solo projects carried on the wings of exhibitionism and conversation; this works better when the artiste is MI Abaga who, over the years, has positioned himself at the center of the Nigerian Hip Hop scene, maintaining relevance in a country where everyone swears the genre is dead. That’s perhaps the curse of MI, his success.

Amongst the biggest musical moments of last year, MI vs. Vector was a prime time event. For what seemed the longest hour, rap acts circulated the within mainstream orbit, and fans of both artistes quickly threw their support behind their faves, and song after song, animal allusion following each other, it was adjudged that Vector was the winner of the contest. Not directly influenced by quality of the diss song, it was rather, the screenshot of a DM that did it. Albeit an unhealthy way to spark conversation, it was the stuff of this digital age: to take and inflate, to create tension amidst the absence of one, anything for the entertaining, anything for the conflicting. Almost 500 words and this “review” has yet gotten around reviewing anything; it’s because, unlike any project, an MI project in 2020 isn’t a regular cup of tea. Particularly on the back of a 2019 where, although he had little music, was one of his most definitive. Finally, against an opponent whose skills wasn’t too far off from MI’s, it put a face to the question of the Short Black Boy’s dominance. Whereas the back and forth with Vector could have been handled better, it birthed a movement, atypical of the generation’s brand of stan culture. The Tribe of Judah, named after “Judah,” a derivative of MI’s real name (Jude), was the support system any 12 year veteran needed.

Teasing music strategically, releasing “The Warrior,” whose last word – a shout of Judah! – hinted at a possible project. Given the nature of MI’s previous releases, Judah, when it came out, wasn’t going to be released to an abyss of creative nirvana. Rather than demonstrate his obvious skill on the microphone, MI would rather pair that with anecdotes peeling into the hide of his greatness. Show-not-tell-Jude.

Released last Friday (March 6th) without much fanfare, MI sent his Tribe all over social media, prompting conversation. There are many talk-worthy moments on the project. A spoken word by a kid opens the Judah EP, delivered as a parable. MI’s singing atop the ominous beat which rolls over to the next song, “The Lion,” is gloomy. “Child of the fire, don’t you ever bleed? / King of the jungle, are you ever weak? / For the whole world’s turned its back on you / And left you here alone.” His verse dabbles from talks of accomplishment (“When the family thrives then I’ve arrived”) to betrayal (“Tell me what to do when the cubs decide/ they gon rule themselves, you ever read Lord of the Flies?”) to braggadocio (“The weapon that can stop me has not been devised”). In relating to the theme of greatness and legacy, these three points take center stage.

Elsewhere, it drives the album. “The Blood,” which many have suggested is a shot at his brother, the producer and rapper Jesse Jagz, features MI at his most stylistic and emotional, his first verse delving into a story which finds a place in the larger narrative. Rapping of hurt and with hurt, Blood is central to understanding MI’s state of mind coming into this album: he possesses the rare mix of understanding and critiquing. However, the second pops its head the most. “Only few niggas is solid as a rock, boy,” he raps on the hook of “The Commandment,” a bouncy bop of a song which features some of the most energetic moments on the tape. Liberian rapper Buckyraw comes in to deliver a standout verse that, following the trend of an MI project, puts a rapper on. Alpha Ojini, a talented producer and rapper who replied Fix Up gets his moment on “The Tribe.” An emotional verse which tells of his relationship with MI, he begins with, how he’d listened to the legend’s critically acclaimed Illegal Music series and asked “who be this guy?” The ideology is solidified by Nawe’s spoken word on “The Sacrifice,” as MI’s leadership qualities are extolled. “You carried your community with you,” she says.

Part of that community is A-Q, the once-controversial rapper who, nowadays, is a label executive and generally cool headed. His verse on “The Trinity” however features that aggressive knowledge his name has come to embody. Over a beat by frequent producer BeatsbyJayy, Q and M are sparring partners sworn to leave the mic on fire. “These rappers are false prophets I am not with them/ they prophesy lies and vision, spread it with confidence/ they don’t paint no pictures, they photo shopping, I’m cropping ’em/ the day of reckoning is when we come for them,” he raps at the end of his verse, as MI takes over for his second verse which, like much of the rapping on Judah, is sweet on the ears and free flowing, a beautiful case of age and fine wine.

MI Abaga - The Judah EP Review

African rap legend MI Abaga

Announced as Judah dropped was that MI, after about ten years, wasn’t a name under the Chocolate City imprint. Mutually both parties have parted ways. It is another move on the chess board. Like A-Q explained to a fan on Twitter, MI’s Incredible Music is still under the Chocolate City building, albeit in a different room. The most common narrative allied with legacy in Hip Hop is being a label executive, an influencer of some sorts, and MI is well positioned to be that. Even though his latest project sells him as a yet formidable rapper, it is curious to see how Jude Abaga will move the arc of his story forward. For the life of me I’m hoping it continues like the 12 years of his career has been: incredible.
