Tems had only ₦200 when we met - Manager Muyiwa reveals

Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has opened up about the artist’s remarkable journey from near-poverty to global stardom.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Muyiwa recounted how their friendship and eventual business partnership began at a time when Tems was facing serious financial struggles. According to him, when they first met, the singer had just ₦200 in her bank account.

“Back then when I was doing my podcast, she would just be there while my cousin and I were recording,” Muyiwa said. “She wasn’t financially buoyant in any capacity. In fact, she had about 200 Naira in her account.”

Despite her situation, Tems’ generous spirit left a lasting impression on him. “If I had money, I’d buy food for everyone, but what really shocked me was that even when she had nothing, she would still order food for us. She had no way of earning at the time. That made me realise she was different from anyone I’d met in Nigeria,” he added.

Muyiwa Awoniyi went on to share how Tems’ professionalism and eagerness to formalise their working relationship stood out. When Tems asked him to be her manager, she wasn’t hesitant about signing contracts, a rare trait in the industry.

“We had verbally agreed on everything, but when I told her I’d send a contract, she was actually chasing me to sign my own part,” he recalled. “That was new for me. So I said, ‘Forget a regular deal, let’s start a company together.’”

The pair had been friends for about three months before they ever discussed business, but their mutual respect and shared vision for the future solidified a partnership that has since helped propel Tems to international acclaim as one of the leading voices in Afrobeats and R&B.

Veteran Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem has sparked fresh conversations on social media with the release of his new politically charged track titled Ojoro INEC.

The song, which dropped on Friday, May 30, 2025, sees Abdulkareem openly criticising the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of partiality and alleging it operates under the influence of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In Ojoro INEC, Eedris Abdulkareem questions several of INEC’s decisions, including its handling of permanent voter cards (PVC) and reluctance to embrace electronic voting. The outspoken rapper also accused the commission of aiding the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and using the judiciary to suppress the voice of ordinary Nigerians.

Lyrics from the track include: “E be like say INEC dey work for Tinubu, E be like say INEC dey work for APC, If na lie, why you go legalise voting without PVC? If na lie, why you no wan use electronic vote?”

Promoting the release on social media, Abdulkareem shared a clip from the song’s video, writing: “Eedris Abdulkareem's latest single aptly titled 'Ojoro INEC', a song that x-rays INEC's lame dependency on the current administration’s whims and its 'errand boy' status to the ruling party in Nigeria, officially drops today on all platforms by 12 AM.”

Ojoro INEC follows Abdulkareem’s earlier protest track Tell Your Papa, in which he urged Seyi Tinubu to relay the struggles of Nigerians to his father, President Tinubu. That song was subsequently banned by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Known for his socially conscious music, Eedris Abdulkareem continues to use his voice to challenge political authorities and amplify the concerns of the masses.

Burna Boy reacts after Burkina Faso President reportedly declines his free concert offer

Nigerian music star Burna Boy has addressed critics following reports that the leader of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, turned down his offer to host a free concert for citizens of the West African nation.

Last week, reports surfaced online claiming that Burna Boy had expressed interest in staging a complimentary show in Burkina Faso as a gesture of goodwill. However, President Traoré allegedly declined the offer, stating that the country needed focus and not distractions at this time.

In the wake of the news, the Grammy-winning artist faced mixed reactions online, with some social media users mocking him over what they described as a public snub.

Reacting via his social media platform, Burna Boy slammed his detractors, expressing disbelief at the negativity surrounding his intentions.

“I said I wanted to do a free show in Burkina Faso and while many people were positive about it, surprisingly, some morons said unbelievably negative things that left me in shock,” he wrote.

He went on to criticize those who made disparaging comments, stating they had no right to question his actions or intentions.

“I’m sorry but you are not qualified to even speak my name if your only contribution to this world is typing dumb comments or talking into your cheap ring light and phone,” Burna Boy fired back.

The singer further defended his track record of humanitarian and charitable efforts across Africa, insisting he owes no one explanations for the work he chooses to do.

“I have nothing to gain from anybody and I don’t owe anyone anything, but that has never stopped me from doing the great work I do. My integrity is unquestionable. So, burn in hell if you said anything negative,” he added.

Burna Boy’s response has since sparked fresh conversations online about celebrity activism, public criticism, and the relationship between artists and African governments.

Chelsea reportedly open talks with Borussia Dortmund midfielder

Chelsea Football Club have reportedly opened talks with Borussia Dortmund over Jamie Gittens ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The 20-year-old has been in the radar of the Blues since the 2025 January transfer window as they continue in their bid to build a formidable team. The Telegraph confirmed that Chelsea have continued from where they left off as it concerns a deal for Jamie Gittens.

This deal puts the future of Jadon Sancho, who is on loan from Manchester United, in doubt despite Chelsea having a contractual obligation to buy for between £20 million and £25 million, having finished in the top 14 at the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

However, the Blues can decide to opt out of the deal and pay a £5 million exit penalty fee. Gittens who was part of Chelsea’s academy as a child, has been expected to attract bids from top clubs aside from the Blues.

The Premier League transfer window is open between June 1 and June 10 due to the Club World Cup and will then reopen from June 16 until September 1.

Camidoh - Your Ghost Lyrics

I miss everything we did before
Hide and seek in the Gucci store
You being the engineer when I write a song
I wish could hold you in my hand
I wish I could carry your pain
But e no dey possible

I'm talking to your ghost in the morning
Asking about your new world how's it going
And I hope you found somebody to talk to when you're lonely
I'm writing a new song can you hear it
It's winter over here when I'm cold
Would you fetch me your favorite blanket to keep me warm (Oh)

For a second I was dreaming feeling you were still next to me
I would have asked you to help me with a line (Ah-ah-ah)
And I almost texted asking you to come give me your company
You know I don't like being alone when it's late night

If I'm talking to your ghost
Let me know you hear me
Are you there my friend
At least I'm not alone

If I'm talking to your ghost
Let me know you hear me
Are you there my friend
At least I'm not alone

Do you still remember my favorite game
The one we played in the rain
Fetch water in your father's old car tyre
Ride till my mother raise cane

Everybody know say this life e be you and me
We dey like two and three
Many many things wey I see for this life alone
And I wish say you dey with me (Oh)

I'm trying
God please
Help me
It's like they're taking everything from me
(Taking everything from me)

For a second I was dreaming feeling you were still next to me
I would have asked you to help me with a line (Ah-ah-ah)
And I almost texted asking you to come give me your company
You know I don't like being alone when it's late night

If I'm talking to your ghost
Let me know you hear me
Are you there my friend
At least I'm not alone

If I'm talking to your ghost
Let me know you hear me
Are you there my friend
At least I'm not alone

I wish I could hold you in my hand
I wish I could carry your pain

Portable slams Carter Efe over ₦10 million TikTok live fee dispute

Controversial Nigerian singer, Portable, has taken a swipe at skit maker and content creator Carter Efe following a public fallout over a proposed TikTok live session appearance.

According to circulating reports, Carter Efe had approached Portable with a request to feature on one of his live streams. However, the conversation reportedly took a sharp turn when Portable demanded a staggering ₦10 million fee to join the session.

Carter Efe, visibly shocked by the demand, took to social media to express his disbelief. “How much are we even making from the live stream? I’m just tired,” he lamented, mocking the hefty fee.

In a fiery response via video, Portable lashed out at Carter Efe, accusing him of attempting to exploit him the same way he allegedly did to his former signee, Young Duu. The Zazoo Zeh hitmaker didn’t mince words, branding Carter a “thief” and recalling past grievances.

“Thief! You ripped my boy. You took him to Lekki and didn’t give him food, buy him a car, or even clothes. Now you want to use me? Bring money first!” Portable fumed.

He further criticised Young Duu for not heeding his advice to charge for appearances during their time together, suggesting the young artist’s current struggles could have been avoided.

“Na Young Duu no get sense. Now they’ve used him. I told him back then, when they call you, ask for money,” Portable added.

This fresh drama has reignited discussions about Carter Efe’s rocky history with Young Duu, whose brief stint under the content creator’s management ended amid allegations of exploitation and neglect.

Latest update on Jadon Sancho's possible transfer

$

0

Here is the latest update on Jadon Sancho's possible transfer ahead of the June 2025 transfer window.

Following the conclusion of the 2024/2025 club football season, Jadon Sancho's future is once again up for debate as current transfer reports give an insight to his next destination.

Chelsea Football Club remain in active communication with Jadon Sancho’s representatives as they attempt to finalise personal terms for a potential transfer, though no agreement on salary has been reached at this stage.

The discussions, which have been ongoing in recent weeks, have yet to yield a consensus, with wage demands still forming the primary point of contention.

According to sources close to the negotiations, a final decision is expected in the coming days, with clarity anticipated by early next week.

Chelsea are keen to bring Sancho to Stamford Bridge as part of their wider attacking rebuild under new management, but the club is reportedly exercising caution in order to maintain wage structure discipline.

If Chelsea and Sancho's camp fail to reach an agreement on personal terms, the player is expected to return to Manchester United, with the club set to receive £5 million in compensation, a clause reportedly agreed upon in the event of a breakdown in negotiations with external suitors.

While Chelsea have expressed firm interest, they are not prepared to overextend on salary expectations, especially given the club’s recent efforts to balance financial sustainability with competitive squad investment.

The next few days will be crucial as both sides push for a resolution. Should a deal be struck, Sancho would become one of Chelsea’s marquee additions this summer.

However, if talks collapse, he will likely rejoin Amorim’s side for pre-season preparations, pending further developments.

Tems' manager Muyiwa Awoniyi exposes shocking streaming revenue gap for Nigerian artists

Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems, has raised concerns about the vast revenue disparity faced by Nigerian artists on music streaming platforms compared to their counterparts in developed countries.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Awoniyi highlighted how the geographical location of music streams plays a significant role in determining the earnings artists receive from these platforms.

According to him, while artists in countries like Sweden can make between $8,000 and $10,000 from a million streams, Nigerian musicians earn as little as $300 for the same number of streams.

“Do you know how much a million streams is worth out of Nigeria? It’s $300,” Muyiwa Awoniyi revealed. “Your one million streams [in Sweden] is between $8,000 and $10,000.”

Tems manager explained that this imbalance is largely due to the low pricing of music streaming subscriptions in Nigeria, around N900 monthly on Spotify, and the wider economic challenges affecting purchasing power in the country.

Awoniyi further pointed out that streaming platforms operate on a territorial model, meaning earnings are determined by the region where the streams originate. “Spotify treats things territorially. So if my IP is anchored to a region where one million streams is $300, I am cooked,” he stated.

His comments have since sparked conversations within the Nigerian music industry about the need for fairer streaming revenue structures for African artists.
