Kizz Daniel’s Fvck You Challenge Is A Genius Move; It’s Good For The Nigerian Music Industry

Sometime in 2016, King of street pop Olamide released a single Who You Epp which he left a verse free for any other artist to jump on. Some folks questioned the rationale behind the idea. There’s a slight possibility that I was one of such folks. What’s the purpose of doing that? It was unclear to a number of people.

Olamide

A bunch of artists jumped on the song. Some of them were prominent acts while others were emerging/upcoming acts. Top artists like Wande Coal and Phyno input their verses. It should be noted that Zlatan Ibile also made his own version back then as an upcoming act. A proper single alongside a music video was later released. The song, belonging to Olamide, featured Wande Coal and Phyno.

Wande Coal

Phyno

The song, which was produced by genius producer Shizzi, topped and stayed on music charts for a long time. Was it a promotional move? I began to ask myself and started to consider the possibility that Olamide had made a thoughtfully-crafted move. It made total sense. It could have also been a fluke and that Olamide just did it strictly out of impulse.

Making a cover of a song is a way to gain some attention from music lovers. There are artists that have made an impression just by making covers of popular songs. It isn’t always a reliable strategy, but it can be effective.

This is, however, different from making the cover of a popular song.

Around mid-February, Mayorkun released a single Hustlers Anthem. The DMW singer had freestyled the song on his Snapchat and his fans pleaded with him to drop the song. Mayorkun dropped the song shortly after and left a verse free for artists to record on. Dremo, Lyta, Oxlade were some of the acts that filled the space on the track respectively.

Mayorkun

Dremo

When Mayorkun dropped the song and it started getting responses from artists, with the hashtag #HustlersAnthem, I confirmed my theory that it was a promotional move albeit strategic. It was even more interesting to me that it wasn’t only beneficial to the artist who originally made the song, but also to those who record their versions (by adding their verses).

Oxlade

Lyta

However, my theory was not solid enough until Afropop act Kizz Daniel released the fast-rising single Fvck You. Kizz Daniel released the single with the same idea of other acts dropping a verse on the track which was left free. Several acts have jumped on the song so far, CDQ, Chinko Ekun, and Sarkodie inclusive. Some of Blaqbonez’ fans have teased him to drop his own version as well.

Asides from this being a wise promotional move, another angle to explore is that this serves as an avenue for artists to do dope features. Just as Olamide did with Wande Coal and Phyno. It is a way to foster relationships with different artists and give their respective fans something they have presumably craved for a long time.

I mean, imagine a Kizz Daniel x CDQ x Sarkodie x BlaqBonez. You can already feel your legs shaking and vibrating to the song.

Also, it can serve as a way for upcoming artists to break out especially if they make a version that is outstanding. Or bring them to the notice of the Nigerian audience.

I reckon that it would be extremely sensible for more acts to give this idea a try, especially emerging artists as it can happen that a top artist might jump on the song and they get to blow up from there.

These are the kind of moves we expect to see more of in the Nigerian music industry.

BET Africa (DStv channel 129)  is opening up the industry this year with a gospel talent search in South Africa and Nigeria scouting the next best and biggest local gospel singer to join BET in the USA for the production of the ninth season of Sunday Best gospel music show.
This year, BET Africa will travel between South Africa and Nigeria in the hopes of finding angelic gospel voices who will be selected to participate in the show, with all expenses paid, from 15 April to 15 May this year. Contestants will be part of the top 20 gospel stars from around the world competing for the top prize.
Nigerian Auditions will be at Harbour Point, Victoria Island – on Friday, 29 March from 08:00 WAT.
Gospel hopefuls must come along with a passport photograph and must have a valid international passport
Here thousands will face local celebrity judges such as Award winning Gospel Artists, Nikki Laoye, Segun Obe along with Songwriter & Record producer, @RotimiKeys – who will select the next big gospel sensation.
This is the second time BET would be giving one lucky Nigerian a chance to represent Africa on the Sunday Best Stage.
In 2009, The Lagos Auditions was hosted by Multiple Grammy Award winner, Kirk Franklin with the judges – Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burell and UK based Nigerian-born singer, Muyiwa Olarewaju at Eko Hotel, Lagos.
Other Preliminary judges for the edition included Nigerian Gospel Artists, Nikki Laoye & Lara George.

Priscilla Bello

Talented Nigerian singer, Priscilla Bello emerged the winning contestant but couldn’t make the trip to the states for the competition due to travel issues and was substituted with the 1st runner up,Funmi Oduyemi, who sadly didn’t make it beyond the first round of the competition.
Funny irony,  Priscilla is now a recording artist based in the United States with her husband.

From time to time, a new artist shows up on the block and when music lovers get a feel of his song, they can’t help but ask themselves why they have been sleeping on him or her for so long. Especially a new act whose sound and style deviates from what the audience has gotten accustomed to. People begin to pay attention and the artist begins to gain traction.

Every upcoming/emerging act has a different story. Some artists, after facing so much struggle, scramble into the music industry. They manage to grab the attention of the Nigerian audience when their single makes it to mainstream to become an instant hit. Things might still be tough for them (no available resources) but with consistent pushing, they overcome and secure a place in the industry.

For others, they come well-prepared. They announce their presence in the music landscape with a bang. You can hardly tell if they’re upcoming because of how mature their sound and their style is.

Rema

This is the story of the newest act that Mavin recently signed. The artist, whose name is Rema, is a talent to behold. His sound is fresh and is like no other in the Nigerian music industry. Not only does he possess enormous talent and an impeccable artist branding, but there seem to be sufficient resources to spend on promotion and publicity.

Out now! Link on my bio 🚨🔈 #Rema-EP

A post shared by REMA (@heisrema) on

Before he was signed to Mavin records, the young artist already established a relationship with D’Prince. He was also responsible for the bridge on DJ Tunez’ Turn Up featuring Wizkid and Reekado Banks.

Rema

Rema’s signing to Mavin records is definitely the perfect record deal a new artist can hope for. Artists like Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Tiwa Savage, Johnny Drille, and others have all enjoyed the platform and have been able to grow their respective careers. Without a splinter of doubt, there are numerous benefits for Rema, and if properly harnessed, he could go on to be one of the biggest Afrobeats acts.

He has dropped a couple of freestyles on his social media pages as well.

One thing that is very noticeable is Rema’s versatility. He switches conveniently between sounds – from Trap to Indian-influenced Afropop to rap. His confidence is gigantic as well.

Shortly after he was signed to Mavin records, Rema dropped a self-titled EP which contained four tracks. The project has been received with critical-acclaim and lot of reception. The EP was heavily influenced by Indian sounds which he fused with Afropop.

Many music fans and social media users have taken to their social media pages to reveal their love for the new act. Some of have commended him for his uniqueness and the novelty of his sound and style. Although, there are some who believe that the new Mavin act sounds like Afrobeats star Wizkid.

A music video of one of the songs on the EP, Iron Man was released also. Rema is swiftly garnering attention and his fan base is expanding by the minute. Just like Oxlade and Fireboy DML, Rema seems to truly be the future of Afrobeats. His sound has the potential to travel beyond borders and continue to push the African sound to the world.

He has a long way to go and with maximum efforts, there’s no stopping him. So, is Rema here to stay?

It’s 2012 and one of the biggest Afropop songs Like To Party just dropped. Everyone is catching a little whine and dance floors are being set on fire. The sound was different, refreshing, thrilling.

Burna Boy

Who’s this guy? People couldn’t help but wonder who this new kid on the block was. His baritone voice is extremely melodious and can tickle a person’s ears to orgasms.

He has since released three studio albums and one EP alongside several singles. We have decided to curate a list of top 10 Burna songs.

This was Burna Boy’s major hit single that introduced him to the mainstream.

Like To Party is a groovy Afropop song and is surely one of Burna’s best songs ever.

Another banger from Burna Boy, Yawa Dey is a dancehall track which was produced by the gifted Leriq.

The song was released one week before the release of the album. It was an instant hit.

Don Gorgon

Produced by the legendary Spellz, Don Gorgon is a Reggae song on which Burna Boy flexes his abilities.

Certainly one of his best works so far.m

Pushing his own movement Spaceship Entertainment, Burna released the single off his third studio album Outside.

A fresh sound that was different from the pop songs everywhere, Devil In California was an absolute hit.

Soke

On the song, Burna reflects the sorry state of the nation.

Rock Your Body

Burna took Dancehall to another level with this track, delivering his line with subtlety while still shaking dance floors.

Notable Lyrics

I woke up and i reached for my phone…

As i picked it up i had some toss of my own…

How we worship social media and leave God out the plans…

My morning devotions was Twitter and Instagram…

At this point, i was clicking with hands…

Twitter mentions and the DM caught my attention…

The message was brief and full of exclamations…

You f’ing killed it on the LAMB cypher, yeah i know…
