Wizkid and Drake

Nigerian Afropop artiste, Wizkid was brought on stage at the O2 Arena in London Monday night 8th of April by Canadian rapper, Drake to perform their hit single, Come Close during his Assassination Vacation Tour where he’ll be spending seven days performing at the O2.

Wizkid’s presence was greeted with a loud cheer from the crowd who were excited to not just enjoy the song but also see the African Starboy on stage who has also been on his own mini-tour lately covering different cities in Canada, from Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton.

Come Closer is a 2017 hit song released by Wizkid where he featured Drake. Although the song featuring Drake, the Canadian rapper couldn’t make an appearance in the video and Wzkid’s fans and other Nigerians dragged Drake on the internet for featuring but not appearing. Rumours did circulate of an unknown issue between Wizkid and Drake, but that was never confirmed by both singers who maintained their friendly relationship both on and off social media.

Wizkid coming up on stage to perform Come Closer and also Soco is huge, not just for him as an artiste, but for African music as the show in O2 Arena will further expose Afrobeat to a more international crowd.

Wizkid also made an announcement recently that he has a new collaboration in the works with the Canadian rapper, Drake.

It is rather impossible to speak of Afrobeats in the USA or the UK without eliciting an emotion or reaction from people. The genre has been largely successful thus far, finding its way into the mainstream market both in the USA and Europe alike.

The proliferation of the genre isn’t a sudden or one-time thing. The growth has been steady and there is a handful of Nigerian musicians to show gratitude to. After working so hard to build a solid brand in the local music scene, these acts have taken up the duty of spreading their music to different regions on a global scale. Some of them include Wizkid, Davido, Tekno, Mr. Eazi, Burna Boy, Runtown, and many more.

I must admit that it is fascinating to see the Nigerian sound establish a stronghold in the international music landscape. International acts such as Drake, Popcaan, Skepta, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Tory Lanez, and others have shown their recognition for our distinct sound and have all adapted it to their respective sound.

It was earlier reported that Davido’s Fall is hugely garnering attention in the US, getting maximum airplay and swiftly climbing up Billboard charts. This informed the singer’s decision to go on a US radio tour as a means to promote his music and brand as an African artist. He is getting a lot of media coverage and his singles If and Fall are doing tremendously well in the states.

Nigerian musicians have been making major moves recently. Or a better way to put it is that major things have been happening for Nigerian artists in the global scene. One can now confidently say that Afrobeats has successfully penetrated the international market.

Tory Lanez put out a body of work a few days ago, named International Fargo. It was basically a ‘refix’ of songs that have stormed the markets from different ends of the world. Some of the songs he made remixes of include Starboy’s Soco, Davido’s Fall, Koffee’s Toast, and more.

Davido performed at J. Cole’s Dreamville festival, making him the first African act to perform at the rapper’s concert. His performance was extremely captivating and he successfully shut down his set, sharing the stage with the likes of Big Sean, 21 Savage, Rhapsody, and others.

Another major move was Burna Boy performing to a sold-out crowd on Friday night at the prestigious Apollo Theater in New York City. He became the first Nigerian artist to achieve such a feat. Okay Africa cited this as an important achievement “The occasion felt special—like a sort of cementing of the cultural influence of Nigerian pop”. His performance spanned for an hour and a half, bringing out UK rapper Dave and Izzy Odigie who danced Zanku impressively to Killin Dem.

Yesterday, Drake surprised his fans in the UK when he brought Wizkid out to perform on stage. He performed Come Closer together with Drake – a song which they both collaborated on – as well as Soco. This was highly unexpected as Wizkid only just finished his Canadian tour. The Afrobeats singer will supposedly drop an album this year and there have been rumors of Drake being on one of the songs.

Osinachi Joseph, popularly known as Sinach, is a Singer, Songwriter and Senior worship leader at Believer’s Loveworld International, also known as Christ Embassy.

Raphael Oshionebo born October 25th 1989 is a musical artist based in Lagos Nigeria.
He hails from Auchi but was born in Uromi Edo State where he had his early primary and secondary school education. His musical journey started as a young kid growing up in Edo state. He had always known he would do music professionally and he has not turned back.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Raphael is the second of four children (all boys) of Dr & Mrs Bruno Oshionebo. His family has always been of great support to his musical career.

He attended Blessed Josephine Primary School Bakhita and Lumen Christi International high school Uromi. He then moved on to syudy Microbiology at the University of Abuja.
Even whilst in the University, Raphael had always known he was going to do music professionally.
Little wonder he got signed on by a record label immediately he graduated from the University.

Raphael Oshionebo whoes stage name is RIO started out his music career with a three year sign on contract with a record label named SS Sounds. This was where he developed his vocal prowess and further harnessed his musical artistry.
After leaving the record label, Rapheal delved a bit into real estate business which was quite short lived as he soon went back to doing music professionally which had always been his passion and forte.
Raphael says the genre of music that inspires him and brings out the best of his musical ability are
Afro beat, Hip Hop, R&B and Reggae.

He acknowledges the likes of Fela, Wizkid and Tuface as those that have largely influenced him musically over the years.

Raphael is coming out with a bang as he is set to drop his new single titled “Cover me” by “Rio” soon
